Subject Separated from the Verb
Sometimes it can be challenging to identify the correct subject when it is separated from the verb, especially in long sentences. In such cases, ignore prepositional phrases when deciding on the verb.
Always match the verb to the main subject, not to the noun inside a prepositional phrase
Examples:
According to the latest report, each employee in the company work/works overtime regularly.
Correct: works
Because the true subject “each employee” is singular, the verb must be singular.
- According to the latest report = Prepositional phrase (extra info, not the subject)
- Each employee = Main subject (singular)
- In the company = Prepositional phrase (extra info, ignore for verb agreement)
- Verb = Should match the singular subject → “works”
Key Point:
- Prepositional phrases that come between the subject and the verb do not affect verb agreement.Structure:
Subject + [Prepositional Phrase] + Verb
Examples:
- The history of ancient civilizations is fascinating.
- Many solutions to the problem have been suggested.
- The impact of climate change is becoming more severe.
- 4. The benefits of regular exercise are well documented.
